Practice Magazine Cover

FHM Website
The practice magazine cover that I produced was designed in another workshop designed to give more practice and therefore confidence when using the programme Photoshop. To start with we were required to pick a picture and from that pictures codes and conventions we needed to decide on an appropriate pre existing magazine title to style it on.
The picture in which I choose was that of a white, young and able bodied woman. I felt that this picture would be most appropriate used on an FHM cover. Other reasons for this decision include the fact that the women is scantily dressed and is posed in a seductive manner. FHM, originally published as For Him Magazine, is an international monthly men's lifestyle magazine. The target audience for such a magazine is young males aged 18 years old to 25 years old.
Such a picture is also appropriate as according to Louis Althusser magazines rely on the idea of interpellation. Whereby the magazine calls out to its audience as they feel they can identify with what is being represented to them. In relation to my picture chosen for the magazine cover the audience believes that the young woman is calling out to them.
From examining my stimulus texts it revealed that the backgrounds behind the models were normally plain with very little happening. The reason for this being that the magazine producers want the audience’s main focus to be on the model not the background. Due to this I decided that it would be appropriate to cut the model out from her original background as it was fairly crowded. I did this on Photoshop using the wand tool to cut around her body shape and then creating another layer as the background
Once this was decided and complete I next had to think about what colour the background behind the model should be. From observing my stimulus texts it became apparent that the colour red was a popular theme. The reason for this being that the colour red is commonly associated with passion.
In addition I noticed that although for the majority of the time the backgrounds were simple they themselves where not a single block colour. Through the use of Photoshop I was able to have a darker colour red reducing to white diagonally across the page. Giving my magazine cover some texture.
Next on the agenda was to find a similar font to that used by FHM for their title. Although I realise that it would be extremely hard to find an exact match to the font. As it is likely FHM have paid a designer to create it for them as their trade mark however there are certain things in which you can look out for in order to find something similar. The reason in which I decided to use the font style for my title is because it has very alike angles to that of FHM’s font and to add to this the title font is san serif just like the actual FHM title.
Furthermore something else which must be taken into consideration with regards to the title is the colour of it. Essentially from my case study material there appeared to be no generic colouring for the title. However the title was always in contrast to the background making it stand out. That is why I chose to use the colour white as it made the title clear and easy to read against a red background. Moreover atheistically it was pleasing to the eye as the background itself descends into white. On the magazine cover a colour code was emerging.
One personal touch which I included was the price sticker although featured on some stimulus material I decided that instead of making it look like a sticker I would design it to look like a button, as FHM is commonly associated with gadgets.
Something else which became apparent when examining the stimulus material was that the headlines included on the magazine cover needed to be short and catchy. Anne Cronin suggests that magazines rely on the concept of the narrative of the self. In the sense that the headlines must entice them to believe that if they buy it they can become it. In relation to my magazine cover headlines such as ‘are you man enough 10 ways to please her’ entice the reader to buy the magazines as they wish to be able to please the model on the front. Again the magazine cover is representing something in which they wish to be able to do or become. Michel Foucault argues that it is less to do with the narrative of the self and more to do with the technologies of the self. He suggests that such technologies of the self as rituals means that because the audience identifies with the magazine they will openly consume its contents because they identify with the representations portrayed to them as factors in their lives.
Additionally something else which was becoming apparent from my case study material was the colour codes used for texts along with the size of the font. All of the writing on my magazine cover follows these established codes.
Also all the textual information provided on my magazine cover is on the right and not overlaying onto the model. As with all of the FHM covers studied there is no writing over the main focus of the picture. If for one reason or another this is unavoidable then the text is placed under the picture. The reason for this being that the model is the main focus point. This is also the reason in which the model on my cover is placed on the left hand side to represent the pictures dominance over the audiences focus.

Further developments in my creativity.

Yesterday i partook in a workshop which is going to help develop my creativity. The workshop was created in order to provide students with an idea of how to make a fully functioning website which is part of the expectations for the advanced portfolio.
The main way in which my creativity has developed through the use of digital technology is the fact that before this workshop i had no idea how to create a website. Now i feel i will be able to create a well organised and functional website suitable for it purpose.
Furthermore the website was designed using the programme Photoshop so this has enabled me to develop my creativity through a more detailed understanding of the programme and how it works. I am now more confident when faced with the challenge of using Photoshop to edit photos as well as designing websites. The above is valuable knowledge as it has provided me with the confidence to experiment with different tools and icons.
Another way in which my creativity has been aided is through the knowledge gained from the workshop about Html links. I am now aware of how to link pages together and to other websites if suitable. This is handy to know as it means i will be able to use the links helping my website look more professional.
In addition my creativity has been developed as i am now able to use a programme called dream weaver which is used to make your website function. Whilst Photoshop is for designing the website with its codes and conventions. Through the use of dream weaver i was able to make a website with functioning buttons which can make things appear or disappear once clicked. I found with the dream weaver workshop that there was alot of information to obtain in a short amount of time. Although such information is helpful to know as otherwise everything that needed to be included on the page would have all needed to be on there from the start. It will also make my website interactive and more entertaining for the user. As well as making it appear more professional.
Essentially i found both programmes challenging but i feel that the reason for this is my lack of practice and understanding for them. This should develop with time.

Additional developments to my creativity through the use of technology

Additional developments to my creativity through the use of technology include the workshop in which I undertook for the programme Photoshop. This workshop provided me with an understanding of how the programme works and the basic skills in which was needed in order to use the tools effectively. This has developed my creativity in the sense that I now have the capability to adapt photos with different effects and other applications which I would not have been able to achieve before.

Another way in which my creativity has been developed is recently I was able to access an electronic catalogue within the college library to research specific books in which I intend to use to help develop my coursework. This catalogue provides information on whether the book is available and its location. This has enhanced my creativity as I have been able to obtain different ideas and perspectives on issues which will directly influence my advanced portfolio.

In order to provide an electronic record of the development of my advanced portfolio I created a blog using the programme blogger. This has expanded my creativity as it has provided me with a place in which I can store and develop a critical evaluation. It also presented me with the skills in which to use a website that was developed with the invention of web 2.0.

How has my creativity developed through using digital technology to complete my coursework production?

There are many ways in which digital technology has helped to develop my creativity in order to complete my coursework. Firstly the use of email provided by the technological advancement in web 2.0 allowed the group to keep in regular contact with each and also provided a forum for creative discussions and ideas. It further provided the group with the resource to send each other different parts of the coursework done by individual members. Thus allowing each member of the group to have a copy of everything. More over it permitted members to add things to each other’s work which developed the coursework further. All of the above helped to develop creativity as it provided the group with a means of organising everything as well as storage.

Due to the advancements of web 2.0 the internet provided the group with a means to research such issues within the film such as genre and its codes and conventions. One way in which we did this was by researching films which were commonly known for their genre such as ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Dawn of the Dead’ and reading reviews posted by people on what they thought the film did well and what they thought the film did not do so well. This helped develop my creativity as it allowed me to obtain an insight into our target audiences preferences through there interaction in online reviews.

In addition through the availability of general release DVD’s we as a group were able to watch films which had similar genres to the one in which we wished to recreate within our own production. This enabled us to look and spot similarities in codes and conventions for certain genres in camera shots, editing, location, dress codes, sound and lighting. Another way in which DVD’s helped with my creativity is when the production was finished the film was saved onto a DVD storage device for transportation to the examining body. The way in which it helped creativity is that DVDs have large amounts of memory and therefore we were unrestricted in relations to editing and production with things such as special effects. To add to this DVD’s are quick and easy to make as well as being much cheaper than film. This therefore means that if you wish to change an aspect of the film it is easily done. Aiding creativity as it allows it to continue from the start to the finish of the production.

The use of digital cameras has helped develop my creativity as digital film for the camera is a lot cheaper than original films for non digital cameras. This therefore allowed me to take many shots of the same scene so that during the editing process we were able to choose which shot we as a group thought best. Mostly however the use of a digital camera helped develop my creativity in the sense that I learnt how to use it. Allowing me to experiment with different shots, angles and positions. This also allowed be to obtain a first hand understanding and experience of what things worked and which things didn’t. Also on a digital camera there is a screen in which you are able to view what you have recorded. Allowing you to preview your work to see whether you like it or not. To add to this digital cameras are fairly light and portable meaning that as a group we were not restricted to where we could film. There is also a function on the digital camera which allows the cameraman to delete any scene in which they do not want. Meaning that the memory on the film or camera is not wasted by unwanted scenes. All of the above help to aid creativity as it makes producing a film cheap and relatively easy.

The use of digital cameras also links in to the new technological advancements in the editing process. Due to these advancements you are now able to film the scenes in any order you like as you are able to put them into the correct order when you are editing. More over the editing process can also be a place for creativity to occur as it is possible to move clips from the original order if it is felt that it is required. Editing programmes now a day allows you to edit the sound at the same time as the film. This enhances creativity in the sense that you are able to have speech or music or even both. Depending on which is deemed appropriate for your genre. This can all be added at the stage of production.

It should be mention that the internet with traditional websites also developed my creativity in the sense that it has allowed the group to research information on films which influenced our own production. Websites which were created with the intension to inform.

YouTube although essentially part of the creation of web 2.0 played a large part in the development of my creativity as it provided myself and my group with a forum in which we could exhibit our production. Although it can be argued that once it was published it wasn’t changed any more but YouTube allowed us to get feed back from people and obtain different opinions. Which in around about fashion has allowed us to see what an audience liked and didn’t. Meaning that we are able to develop more ideas for our next production. However in a more literal sense YouTube provided me with a place to view clips from films that were our influences.
